Inspired by religion, mythology, and creation myths such as Genesis, the Cosmic Egg, primordial chaos, and Saṃsāra, the film reimagines the act of creation as both divine and dangerous. Its visual language draws from atmospheric, dreamlike works such as Angel’s Egg and Puparia, using minimal dialogue, surreal imagery, and a strong sense of isolation to build an emotional world. The film follows a godlike young being who creates a beautiful universe, only to be consumed by the very power and desire that drive her. Through shifting color palettes, textured linework, fluid transitions, and a contrast between darkness and radiant fantasy landscapes, the film becomes a poetic reflection on creativity, greed, sacrifice, and the fragile boundary between inspiration and destruction.

The making of Shadow of the Muse was a long process of experimentation, revision, and rediscovery. During development, many early ideas, animatics, and designs were reworked as the project gradually moved away from a traditional image of a goddess and toward a character that could move more naturally in animation. The production also involved testing different approaches to line quality, color, background design, camera movement, and transitions. Tools such as Toon Boom Harmony, Procreate, Procreate Dreams, Maya, and After Effects were used throughout the workflow, from character animation and background creation to compositing and color correction. References from live-action footage, 3D models, music, and experimental animation helped guide the movement and mood of the film.
